Girls Taking Action™ was founded in 2005 by Dr. Verna Cornelia Price was a response to a request from North High School in Minneapolis that was experiencing a rise in violence among girls. This program provides structured weekly mentoring combined with an interactive – research based curriculum within the context of real-life experiences to provide girls with a positive outlook for their futures with the intention of decreasing violence while increasing academic engagement and high school graduation rates.
The Girls Taking Action – Summer Enrichment Program is designed to change the narrative for girls of color by providing access to activities that have been traditionally expensive and exclusive, to wealthy people. As many parents know, the pandemic confined our students to learning and engaging solely through screen time. This program will provide a range of outdoor activities that will promote overall health and wellness, which will include sailing and golfing.
BWOC co-founder Martha Arrandano served as the golfing program coordinator for 15 girls between the ages of 13 to 18 years old.
The agenda for the golf outing was developed by professional golfer Ingrid Gallo, LPGA Class A Member.
